The Indianapolis Public Library and WFYI Public Media are excited to celebrate Día del Niño at Be My Neighbor Day on Saturday, April 1, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Library.
Inspired by one of public television’s most beloved programs, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Be My Neighbor Day welcomes families from Central Indiana to celebrate and learn about the importance of being a caring neighbor. Dia del Niño, a day focused on children, families, and literacy, is the perfect time to celebrate our community. Children can write and send letters to neighbors near and far, hear stories read aloud in English and Spanish, meet Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kittycat, dance and listen to concerts, and receive free books.
“WFYI and The Library are committed to nurturing learning and serving families,” said WFYI Vice President of Community Engagement Gail Thomas Strong. “We’re thrilled to offer this day that centers lifelong learning and the many ways that we can all be caring neighbors.”
Musical performances, art stations and community resources will round out the day. Guests are encouraged to bring new lip balm to donate to children in local hospitals. A special sensory-friendly experience is offered from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
“This partnership allows The Library to connect families with resources they need to help their children flourish,” said Shael Weidenbach, area resource manager of youth services at The Library. “By celebrating children and promoting literacy, we are strengthening our community for generations to come.”
Día del Niño at Be My Neighbor Day is made possible by PNC Grow Up Great and by Eric and Pat Gillispie, CollegeChoice 529, and Friends of The Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation. Additional event partners include Child Care Answers and Reach Out and Read. The event is free and open to the public.
