The Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) is pleased to announce that Kim Ewers has been appointed as diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. Ewers will work closely with the CEO and senior leadership to assess, design, develop, implement, research, and evaluate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives appropriate to the organizational values, goals, and strategic priorities of The Library.

In her new role, Ewers will support The Library’s efforts in relation to stewarding a diverse book collection, increasing vendor diversity through contracts and purchasing, utilizing diverse recruitment efforts to attract and maintain staff, and considering racial equity while creating Library programs. She will also be involved with the climate improvement process, examining The Library’s policies, procedures, and employee perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Ewers has a long history with The Library. She started working as a Library assistant in September 1994 and has worked with IndyPL for more than 28 years, taking on various roles including public service librarian, supervisor librarian, and diversity fellow. She has served The Library as the interim diversity, equity, & inclusion officer since November 2022.

She earned her Master's in Library and Information Science from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis and is currently seeking her Master's in Human Resources Management from Southern New Hampshire University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Butler University.

“Ewers has worn many hats and has excelled in various roles,” said Gregory Hill, Sr., Chief Executive Officer at The Indianapolis Public Library. “She has a proven track record of supporting the mission and values of The Library, and I know she’ll lead us in the right direction during this season of growth.”

Ewers is excited to take on this new role.

“The Library plays a key role in our diverse city,” said Ewers. “My goal is for all staff and patrons, no matter their race, background, or identity, to know that Libraries are for everyone and that we are working to make this an inclusive space.”
