Indianapolis Public Library Posts CEO Job, Kicking Off National Search

The Indianapolis Public Library Board of Trustees is excited to find the next leader of its library system, which serves approximately 900,000 patrons in Marion County and a staff of over 570 employees. A diverse CEO Search Committee composed of staff, community stakeholders, and patrons, is working with the Board's Diversity, Policy and Human Resources Committee to bring two or three candidates to the full library board for consideration.

A national search began with the posting and advertising of the position on May 16, and the posting will close on June 26. The CEO Search Committee will review applicants, select semifinalists, and conduct semifinal interviews during the month of July.

Finalists will be invited to Indianapolis for final interviews, a hospitality tour, a staff town hall, and public presentations (taking place at Central Library in the Clowes Auditorium) on August 3. The Library Board will then determine to which candidate they would like to offer the position, and the formal hiring process will ensue.

Previous CEO Jackie Nytes served in the role from 2012 until August of 2021, agreeing to a separation from the role with the Library’s Board of Trustees. Chief Public Services Officer, John Helling, served as interim CEO until departing on April 1. Nichelle M. Hayes, previously IndyPL’s Manager of the Center for Black Literature & Culture, is currently leading the Library as interim CEO.
