Leah Johnson, an award-winning author, will be discussing her first middle-grade book Ellie Engle Saves Herself! on Sunday, April 30, 2-3 p.m., at Central Library. Johnson will share the stage and participate in conversation with Ashley C. Ford, the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir Somebody’s Daughter.
This event is hosted by The Indianapolis Public Library and Kids Ink Children's Bookstore, an Indianapolis-based independent bookstore specializing in children's books, games, puzzles, and creative-play toys.
“We are excited to celebrate the launch of Ellie Engle Saves Herself! by bringing two award-winning authors to Central Library!” said Kirsten Weaver, teen programming specialist at The Indianapolis Public Library. “Both of these authors write books that speak to the strength and resilience of women, and we know this event will inspire tweens, teens, and adults alike.”
Ellie Engle Saves Herself! is forthcoming from Disney-Hyperion in May 2023. It tells the story of a young girl who gains the power to bring anything back to life with her touch. The book is currently available for preorder by calling Kids Ink at 317-255-2598 or by visiting their website. The book will also be available for purchase at the book discussion. Kids Ink launched Johnson's first two books and is pleased to share the launch of Ellie Engle Saves Herself with The Library. Ford's books will be available at the event for purchase as well.
Johnson and Ford are both native to Indiana. Johnson was raised in Indianapolis and her debut novel You Should See Me in a Crown, takes place in a fictional Indiana town. The book was given a Stonewall Book honor and named one of the best 100 young adult books of all time by TIME magazine. Ford’s memoir, a New York Times Best Seller, explores growing up in Fort Wayne and dealing with poverty, adolescence, and a fraught relationship with her mother.
Seating is limited and available on a first-come basis. A book signing will take place immediately following the event. This event is made possible by Disney-Hyperion in support of Kids Ink.
